We gather at Sandia Automotive, 6001 Pan American Freeway in Albuquerque for a warm New Mexico welcome breakfast. At 9:30 a.m., we depart for our journey to Chama. We take 1-40 East to Tijeras onto the Historic Turquoise Trail on Highway 14. Drive through Madrid, one of the wildest towns in the West know as an old mining town uncovered by artists with a romantic setting of old buildings colored with coffee shops, galleries and artist studios. Follow Highway 14 towards the Cerillos Hills one of the last places for turquoise to be mined and journey north to the Santa Fe by-Pass. Drive through the corridor of pueblo villages along Highway 84. When you reach the pueblo of Pojaque continue north towards Espanola, low-rider capital of the world, Espanola, and following the route to Georgia O’Keeffe country where the colorful bedrock exposed dramatically displays New Mexico’s outer edge of the Colorado Plateau paints the landscape like a layered cake. Enjoy the view of Ghost Ranch known for the infamous artist Georgia O’Keeffe who was inspired by this textured landscape.
Lunch will be at Abiquiu Inn, complete with some of the most pristine southwest landscapes across the country. After lunch, follow Highway 84, a scenic drive up to the town of Chama along green pastures and scenic mountain views. We will arrive to Chama Land and Cattle Company for a cocktail hour and delicious dinner.
